iPad 3 confirmed for early 2012 launch, well sort of..

by Devon

Around this time of the year is when all sorts of Apple rumors kick in, and let’s face the fact that they basically are rumors. What people or ‘sources’ claim are just their opinions or something they have heard along the grapevine, rumors that have absolutely no backing whatsoever.

Recently I read a report on a Chinese website that claimed the next iPad, i.e. iPad3 or iPad2+ or whatever Apple decides to call it, is going to come out in time for the holiday season. The apparent claim was that Apple wanted an iPad3 to be under the Christmas tree of every household by the time the holidays. By the time I was finished reading that report, I wanted to find out who was this writes ‘source’ so I could meet him and knock some sense into him.

Apple is known to strictly follow a one year product life cycle program, meaning they wait an year at least to release a newer model of any of their iDevice line of products. Why is the world would Apple release

Video: iPad 2 Offers Glasses-Free 3D

by Devon

Researchers from the EHCI Research Group have been working on some pretty cool head-tracking technology to allow the iPad 2 to produce 3D images without the use of special 3D glasses. The front facing camera on the iPad 2 has been made to track the users head movement and then corresponding to the position of their head display a certain image so they end up with a 3D effect.

The demos shown in the video below are not anything mind blowing but with some more time I’d be interested to see what they and other developers produce using the technology.

16GB iPad Costs $259.60 To Build

by Devon

iSuppli, a market research company, have estimated that it costs Apple $259.60 to build the 16GB iPad. This is only what it costs for the components though so Apples margins aren’t huge.

The component that costs the most is the touchscreen panel which is $95 and some of the other cost are from items such as the 16GB flash storage ($29.50), the aluminum back casing ($10.50)  and the processor ($26.80).

iSuppli also is expecting that the number and complexity of the iPads components to decrease as the build process becomes more streamlined. The 32GB and 64GB iPads cost around $289.10 and $348.10 to build.
